Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’ is on the road to success (Includes first-hand account)

It’s common for there to be a few years between writer/director Edgar Wright‘s projects, but it’s always worth the wait. It’s been four years since his sci-fi comedy The World’s End came out, so schedule dictates he was due for another big screen appearance. Wright’s latest picture, Baby Driver, had its premiere at SXSW last night. But for all those who couldn’t be there, they’ve released the official and international trailers to build anticipation for the summer 2017 release.

Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a young getaway driver that rivals both Jason Statham and Ryan Gosling in skill — and that’s just based on the select chase scenes included in the trailers. He’s beholden to a crime boss portrayed by Kevin Spacey and tasked with keeping his associates – Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Jon Bernthal — out of police custody. However, Baby is given a new lease on life when he meets a waitress played by Lily James, though it simultaneously makes it more difficult for him to escape his employer.

What makes this crime thriller unique is Elgort’s character suffers from severe tinnitus, so he is always listening to music to drown out the ringing in his ears. Therefore, the movie’s action is set to Baby’s personal soundtrack. Music has consistently been an important aspect of Wright’s films, but this is the first time it will drive the action in one of his pictures; the effect of which can be seen in the international trailer set to Golden Earring’s “Radar Love.” The two trailers suggest the picture will have exciting action sequences, great performances and a sense of humour – the latter is made obvious when the thieves have a misunderstanding regarding the identity of Mike Myers at the end of the official trailer.
