Funko’s New York Toy Fair Announcements

Most of the figures are available for pre-order at major retailers — or on shelves now!

The first quarter of each year provides toy companies with two opportunities to showcase upcoming products and reveal new lines. The first is London Toy Fair in January and the second is a few weeks later in New York. Collectors watch for news from each of these events to see what they can look forward to in the year ahead. Traditionally, Funko uses these events to reveal upcoming lines to fans with rapid fire social media posts of never-before-seen products, as well as video tours of their booth.

Toy Fair New York announcements ranged from Pop! to Vynl to Rock Candy to Pop! keychain to 5 Star to Savage World to SuperCute Plush, as well as a significant commitment to the recently launched Pop! PEZ product line.

However, Funko also seized the opportunity to unveil a brand-new category called Pop! Town. Inspired by the classic Christmas village display figures, each set in this line includes an original Pop! character sculpt and an iconic building.

  • ‘It’ trailer may be too scary for audiences (Includes first-hand account)

The remake of Stephen King’s It hit a significant roadblock in 2015 when writer/director Cary Fukunaga left the project due to differences regarding the film’s vision and budget. His departure delivered a major blow to those intrigued by his take on the story about a tightknit group of friends who take on an alien devourer as children — and then adults — in their small New England town. But New Line was determined to move ahead with the production. A couple of months later, they tapped director Andrés Muschietti, who made waves with his horror feature Mama, to take over the two-part film adaptation. This announcement was followed by the casting of Bill Skarsgård in the title role, a.k.a. Pennywise, which was originally played by Tim Curry. Recently, a series of disturbing photos featuring the otherworldly, evil clown were released. And now finally, the first trailer has arrived.

  • Thor doesn’t know how to pay his rent and it’s hilarious (Includes first-hand account)

While last year’s Captain America: Civil War pitted the Avengers against each other in a battle of right vs. also right, there were a couple of members missing from the fray. Bruce Banner/Hulk’s absence is easily explained by his tendency to go into hiding after major skirmishes, but where was Thor (Chris Hemsworth)? Marvel subsequently released a YouTube video, titled “Team Thor,” in which Thor explains he’s taking a break from being a superhero and living a “normal” life in Australia with his roommate, Darryl — also, he wasn’t asked to join either side of the conflict. In conjunction with the release of Doctor Strange on Blu-ray, Marvel checks in with Thor and Darryl who are having a bit of a disagreement over the rent in “Team Thor: Pt. 2, Where Are They Now?.”
