Since announcing an all-female cast reboot, Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters movie has been on everyone’s radar. The director has “leaked” several photos from the set, giving fans their first glimpses of the team in uniform and their upgraded gadgets. But still, one never really knows what to expect when a classic franchise is given a makeover. Today some light was cast on the shadows with the release of the first, full-length trailer.
Sequels rarely compare to the original, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still enjoyable. Despicable Me introduced audiences to Gru (Steve Carell) and the Minions seven years ago, and they’ve experienced a lot of changes since then. After adopting three girls, Gru switched sides and started playing for the good guys — a transition that was more difficult on his yellow helpers than their boss. There is a general perception that manga comics mostly contain fantastical stories about young people with magical powers who battle evil in colourful costumes or dark tales of brooding teens dealing with the supernatural. Although those comprise a large portion of the narratives available, there is another variety consisting of thoughtful dramas, often historically based, that chronicle the lives of ordinary people. These have served as the source for several celebrated Japanese animated films, the latest of which is titled In This Corner of the World.
It’s been a while since a Star Wars Celebration has actually been able to hail a new addition to the franchise. But with the release of J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens at the end of the year, this event was going to be special. Day one of the fan convention included a highly anticipated Q&A with Abrams; Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy; stars of the new film, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley; veterans of the original saga Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels; as well as the team that created the film’s robots and a group of Stormtroopers.
A truly great trailer entices viewers to watch a soon-to-be-released film without revealing too much of the story — particularly not the narrative’s key twists, best jokes or scares, or the entire film’s trajectory. These skillfully ambiguous trailers are no longer the norm as it’s not uncommon to finish watching a preview for a movie and feel as if you’ve just seen the whole thing; but occasionally a studio finds this balance of creating temptation through vagueness that convinces moviegoers to head to the theatres once it’s released. Fox Searchlight appears to have done so with the trailer for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
