    While there’s always been movies, TV shows and animation to bring popular comic book heroes like Superman, Batman and The X-Men to the screen, there’s also been a reluctance to give the same attention to lesser known properties. However with the success of the previously unfamiliar Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, studios have been more inclined to take a chance on some other great stories. Next up is Marvel’s Black Panther, whose hero was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War.

    Two years ago, Netflix teamed up with Marvel Studios to provide subscribers with some quality, long-form, superhero content. Beginning with Daredevil in 2015, then Jessica Jones the same year, Luke Cage in 2016 and most recently, Iron Fist, audiences were enthralled by the series’ ability to create exciting stories that still feel true to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, one thing fans quickly realized is they all occur in a different corner of Hell’s Kitchen. With several crossovers already, it was only a matter of time before the four heroes would meet. The Defenders trailer offers a glimpse of what that team-up will look like.

    It’s been four years since the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) starred in a standalone film and he made his last big screen appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron two years ago. His absence from the Captain America: Civil War team-up has been explained via a couple of amusing YouTube videos. But Thor’s Australian vacation has ended and he’s returned to Asgard where he’s needed — and the teaser trailer for Thor: Ragnarok shows just how much.

    Considering the number of Spider-Man movies that have been released in the last 15 years, including two reboots, it wasn’t entirely surprising they decided to introduce the new actor in a Marvel team-up instead of a standalone film. But now it’s time for Tom Holland to don the blue and red suit in his own picture… with a little help from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). One of the most reassuring things about the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer is it doesn’t appear audiences will be forced to sit through yet another origin story.

    While last year’s Captain America: Civil War pitted the Avengers against each other in a battle of right vs. also right, there were a couple of members missing from the fray. Bruce Banner/Hulk’s absence is easily explained by his tendency to go into hiding after major skirmishes, but where was Thor (Chris Hemsworth)? Marvel subsequently released a YouTube video, titled “Team Thor,” in which Thor explains he’s taking a break from being a superhero and living a “normal” life in Australia with his roommate, Darryl — also, he wasn’t asked to join either side of the conflict. In conjunction with the release of Doctor Strange on Blu-ray, Marvel checks in with Thor and Darryl who are having a bit of a disagreement over the rent in “Team Thor: Pt. 2, Where Are They Now?.”

    There are some characters who through years of canon have become iconic. Their stories have taken many forms, but their essence remains unchanged. This allows for multi-generational fandom that can relate to one another because the focus of their esteem is essentially the same. Comic book characters top this list as almost everyone can hear the names of certain heroes and not only recognize them but conjure some feeling associated with them: Batman, Superman… Wolverine. Once in a while, someone entrusted with their tale does something truly interesting with the privilege, producing a new narrative that demands fans’ attention. Logan is that story.

There’s a fine line between regulation and control; and while one may appear essential to co-existence, the other is a significant and probable risk. Captain America: Civil War addresses these questions, dividing The Avengers into opposing factions.

But if you delve a little deeper you soon realize not everyone in tights and a mask is a by-the-book, easily defined “good guy.” Some of them will do anything it takes to get the job done, regardless of whether the mission is personal or professional. They are the anti-heroes of the crime-fighting universe, keeping a foot on either side of the criminal world. Deadpool is one of the most notorious personalities in this category of characters and he finally got his own movie.

    If there’s something Marvel Studios has proven good at, it’s generating a world in which there is a small degree of separation between characters even though they don’t appear together on screen. The Marvel Universe is an intricately weaved space in which fans can be delighted, but not surprised, when storylines from other movies leak into a new picture. It’s a vital ingredient to their success and all part of the magic that audiences have come to expect. Though Ant-Man is not one of their most popular comic book characters, he is seamlessly incorporated into the thriving realm of admired superheroes while differentiating himself from the pack.

  • Spider-Man re-casted for Sony, Marvel reboot

    It was announced earlier this year Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios would be teaming to reboot the Spider-Man franchise. Today, they made a joint announcement to reveal they’ve found their new web-slinger as well as the person who will be calling the shots behind the camera. Peter Parker will be played by Tom Holland and the yet-to-be-named new adventure will be directed by Jon Watts.
