A scene from 'The Great Gatsby'

Countdown NYE with your favourite fandom

Find the exact time to mark the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve with one of these iconic film or TV moments.

We all have different ways of ringing in the new year. Some people like to dress up and attend fancy countdown parties or go to free events hosted around the city. Others may choose to stay home with friends and loved ones, watching the ball drop on television.

But what’s the movie fan to do? Holidays are an excellent time to cozy up with a good film. However, it’s easy to get caught up in a marathon watch session and entirely miss the change over to the new year.

Luckily, there is an amusing solution to this conundrum. By starting certain films or TV episodes at a specific time, you can align an iconic scene with the second the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Wicked fans can mark the moment with Elphaba’s final cry in “Defying Gravity.” Others may go the classic route with Rocky’s triumphant moment atop the stairs. Nihilists (or simple admirers of cinematic excellence) can cheers the building’s collapse at the end of Fight Club. Those still in a party mood may choose the infamous toast in The Great Gatsby or the actual NYE party in When Harry Met Sally. Romantics can mark the occasion with Ross and Rachel’s first kiss in Friends.

Whatever your fandom, celebrate the new year with your favourite fictional characters. Follow the chart below to start one of these 12 film or TV episodes at the precise time so it reaches that special moment at midnight.

While last year’s Captain America: Civil War pitted the Avengers against each other in a battle of right vs. also right, there were a couple of members missing from the fray. Bruce Banner/Hulk’s absence is easily explained by his tendency to go into hiding after major skirmishes, but where was Thor (Chris Hemsworth)? Marvel subsequently released a YouTube video, titled “Team Thor,” in which Thor explains he’s taking a break from being a superhero and living a “normal” life in Australia with his roommate, Darryl — also, he wasn’t asked to join either side of the conflict. In conjunction with the release of Doctor Strange on Blu-ray, Marvel checks in with Thor and Darryl who are having a bit of a disagreement over the rent in “Team Thor: Pt. 2, Where Are They Now?.”

With DC and Warner Bros. establishing a solid foothold in the comic book/superhero market, it was only a matter of time before they would release an Avengers-style team-up. Promotion for Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Justice League movie has been ramping up over the last week with new teasers and posters, but the big announcement was the first full-length trailer. With two-and-a-half minutes of footage, fans definitely have a better idea of what to expect from the November release.

  • Watch old faves on the big screen at Great Digital Film Fest

The invention of television was considered a major threat to the film industry — why would people go to the theatre to watch a movie when they could be entertained in their own living rooms? But audiences kept going to cinemas because it’s not just about the content, but the experience. The same is true today. In spite of the endless amount of stories available for streaming on any number of devices, people still head to their local theatre to catch the latest big budget spectacle, awards-worthy performance or genre offering.

  • Review: ‘Harry Potter’ 4K goes back to where it all began (Includes first-hand account)

It’s amazing to think that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were introduced to the world 16 years ago, and then grew up before audience’s eyes over the next decade as they and the beloved characters they portrayed turned from children to young adults. A few months ago, years five through seven at Hogwarts were released on 4K ultra-high-definition and the effect was stunning. The darkest scenes were displayed in rich shades of black that illuminated the many wicked deeds that occurred in the shadows. Now the first four years of their magical education and battles against Voldemort have also been transferred to 4K: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
