‘Zoolander 2’ announced in style at Paris Fashion Week

There have been a lot of headlines from Paris Fashion Week, but Tuesday’s unique announcement tops them all. At the close of the Valentino show, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson took to the runway, reprising their Zoolander characters Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald to the tune of “Don’t You Want Me.”

News of the appearance spread like wildfire via Vine and Instagram, and it wasn’t long before Paramount confirmed that a sequel to the iconic comedy would be released Feb. 12, 2016. There are also reports the film will begin shooting in Rome, the designer’s home base, in the spring.

The really, really, really good-looking men undoubtedly stole the show with their blue steel stares, outshining the other models as only Derek and Hansel could. Even more surprising — Derek appears to have completely conquered his inability to turn left! Later, Valentino’s reps described their couture: “Derek wears a custom night butterflies brocade suit with hand-embroidered overcoat and black creeper shoes. Hansel wears a silk continent print pajama suit with double cashmere overcoat and open sneakers.”

It’s been 14 years since the original film was released and rumours of a sequel have circulated for at least half as long. Stiller will return to the director’s chair with a script by Justin Theroux. Earlier this year, Christine Taylor (Stiller’s wife in real-life) reported she would reprise her role as journalist Matilda Jeffries though the direction of her character or the current state of her relationship with Derek remains unknown. Penelope Cruz is also set to star opposite the male supermodel, though still no word on whether Will Ferrell will return as the evil designer Mugatu.

Regardless of whether the story revolves around the aging fashion duo reinventing themselves for the modern catwalk or involves Derek overcoming his disappointment in his overweight, smart son (both ideas that have been floated), fans will sashay to the theatre. So only one question remains after the trendy launch: who won the walk-off?!

When rising horror master James Wan introduced audiences to Annabelle in 2013’s The Conjuring, it instantly rose to the ranks of Good Guy (a.k.a. Chucky) and the Poltergeist clown on the list of all-time creepy movie dolls. This film was immediately followed by a standalone prequel — the second film set in the universe of Ed and Lorraine Warren — which began with the same tale related about the doll in the first picture and an origin story involving Satanists. And now we have Annabelle: Creation, the fourth set in the universe and a prequel to the prequel.

Sequels rarely compare to the original, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still enjoyable. Despicable Me introduced audiences to Gru (Steve Carell) and the Minions seven years ago, and they’ve experienced a lot of changes since then. After adopting three girls, Gru switched sides and started playing for the good guys — a transition that was more difficult on his yellow helpers than their boss. However, fighting the good fight is often a thankless job… and being bad is so much more fun. Thus, in Despicable Me 3, Gru has a choice to make.

While most people consider animated films to be happy-go-lucky pictures about cute creatures on relatively epic adventures, looking more closely at many of these movies reveals they often also address some serious issues. If one looks even further beyond the mainstream releases from Disney, Pixar and Illumination, they’ll find a number of beautifully animated films that address some adult subjects; and there isn’t necessarily a moral to the story. The medium also lends itself to making certain stories more accessible to wider audiences. The Breadwinner appears to be an example of all these things.

  • ‘Fargo’ season 3 trailer shows different sides of Ewan McGregor (Includes first-hand account)

Television shows have been regularly challenging theatrical films in terms of providing audiences quality entertainment. Networks like HBO, FX and AMC have dominated awards ceremonies in recent years by delivering exceptional content and notable visuals. Moreover, an increasingly popular model built on independent seasons that feature new characters and storylines connected by an overarching theme has renewed audience’s interest in TV dramas. One of the advantages of this template has been the ability to attract Hollywood actors to key roles since the commitment isn’t any more demanding than a film shoot. It’s been applied numerous times now but one of the most popular instances has been in FX’s Fargo, which recently released its season three trailer.
