‘Transformers One’ is the thrilling tale of friends on a world-changing quest to save their planet that will inevitably shatter their bond.
‘Mean Girls’ (2024) brings some of the Broadway hit’s songs to the big screen, taking advantage of the screen medium to amp up the choreography.
While the American justice system is supposed to be built on the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, it often doesn’t work that way. For one, law enforcement can become so focused on a single suspect, they view all the evidence through a lens of bias. Second, many suspects are often tried by the media and public opinion before they even step foot in a courtroom. Finally, if it turns out the prime suspect is innocent, it’s often decided only after their reputation has suffered irreparable damage. For Richard Jewell, his 15 minutes of fame turns into a never-ending nightmare overnight in this true story.
There are many types of venues that gather strangers into a single spot, each with their own stories that briefly intersect for this comparatively brief and forgettable period of time. Whether they’re attending for food, lodging, business, entertainment or some combination, the reason for congregating can also be inconsequential and just a matter of necessity or obligation. But occasionally something extraordinary (or extraordinarily horrific) occurs that forever links these people to each other, intertwining their narratives in a manner no one expected when they crossed the threshold. This is what happens when patrons check-in in for Bad Times at the El Royale.
Being able to navigate tenuous relationships and correctly gauge people’s feelings is a specific and valuable skill. While it could have multiple applications, a key use for such an ability is negotiations… and if one learns to harness and hone these instincts, the sky’s the limit on where they could go. It, of course, has everyday practical uses such as getting the best price on a car or asking for a raise; but on a larger scale, it can mean talking down someone who’s suicidal, navigating peace talks or discussing terms with a hostage-taker. In Beirut, such a man is an important asset.
Although the musical’s heyday is long past, it has seen somewhat of revival in recent years. While La La Land is a throwback to the classic feel and style of the big budget productions, another film has to some extent reimagined the genre to incorporate a more contemporary approach to the old school pictures. While at first glance, Baby Driver doesn’t look like a musical, it certainly shares some elements with the finely tuned genre.
It’s common for there to be a few years between writer/director Edgar Wright‘s projects, but it’s always worth the wait. It’s been four years since his sci-fi comedy The World’s End came out, so schedule dictates he was due for another big screen appearance. Wright’s latest picture, Baby Driver, had its premiere at SXSW last night. But for all those who couldn’t be there, they’ve released the official and international trailers to build anticipation for the summer 2017 release.
When the story of a former villain turned unexpected foster father was released, it captured the hearts of audiences. Who could resist the sweet little girl and her fluffy unicorn, or the once evil man who can’t withstand the love of three intruders? But it wasn’t just the human characters that gained notice. At the same time everyone was introduced to this newly formed family, they fell in love with the Minions. Small, yellow, pill-shaped creatures who live only to serve their villainous boss. But where did they come from? The Minions movie answers that question and more.
